Stephen Arthur Showers (IABE ’58)
February 2, 1936 – May 3, 2016

Stephen Arthur “Steve” Showers (IABE ’58), who served as president of his own insurance agency for 42 years and was actively involved in his community, entered the Chapter Eternal on May 3, 2016.  He died of natural causes at Rosewood Estate of Friendship Village in Waterloo, Iowa.  He was age 80.

Showers was born February 2, 1936 in Dubuque, Iowa.  He was the son of the late Maynard and Gertrude (Christoffersen) Showers.

He graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1954 and enrolled at the University of Iowa.  He pledged the Iowa Beta chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and was initiated into the Fraternity on March 13, 1955.  He received SAE badge number 91715.

“Steve was in my pledge class and we graduated and were commissioned at the same time.  He was a good friend and we stayed in touch over the years,” said William “Bill” Hise (IABE ’58).  “He was a good student at Iowa where he played on the golf team and was very active in the fraternity.

“We often stopped at his office in Waterloo on our way to Iowa City when our two children were students there.  Steve and his wife Nancy visited us Minneapolis and at our lake home in Wisconsin.  We would see them at the Letterman's Brunch every year before the first football game.”

Showers graduated from the University of Iowa in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in business commerce.  After graduation, he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1959-1962.

He was the president and owner of Showers Insurance Agency in Waterloo from 1968 until his retirement July 1, 2010. He married Nancy Belle Stifel on April 5, 1975, at First United Methodist Church in Waterloo.

Showers was a member of the First Congregational Church.  He served as past president and a 53-year member of Waterloo Rotary Club.  In addition, for 47 years he was active with the Waterloo Ambassadors and was a member of the Spokesman Club and Jaycees.  In 1995, he and Nancy were named as the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce Citizens of the Year. Steve also was a high school football referee.

"Brother Steve Showers is remembered by his fraternity brothers as a man who was active in his community and loved to play golf,” said Iowa Beta Alumni Association president Marc Rosenow (IABE '86).  "On behalf of all Iowa Beta alumni, we send our condolences to his family and fraternity brothers."

Steve Showers is survived by his wife, Nancy; his sons Robert S. (Donna) of Bloomington, MN, and David D. of Waterloo; and his daughter, Suzy (Joel).

“May the memory of his good deeds and the example of his noble life ever abide with us as a lasting heritage throughout all succeeding generations.”
